I was watching the Saturday Night Live from a couple weeks ago when Ellen Page was hosting. I got to the end of the episode, and as the credits were scrolling by, I noticed a name that looked somewhat familiar. I quickly paused it, and there it was: “John Solomon”. OK, that’s not quite how you spell my name, but it was still pretty cool.

Yet More Stupidity from School Administrations

Here’s yet another example of a school taking its rules way too far. This time it comes from Shepherd Junior High in Mesa, Arizona. The school recently refined its rules regarding “public displays of affection” (PDAs) to ban any hugs lasting longer than 2 seconds. As of last week, students have been receiving detentions for merely hugging their friends at school. Upset by this ridiculous rule, the students took it upon themselves last Friday to hold a 20 minute long public hug-a-thon across the street from the school.

I think it’s great that these students are willing to stand up for what is right, and hope that they get the rule changed. As for the administrators who enacted this rule, I only have this to say: the hugs aren’t hurting anyone, so why don’t you stop this “politically correct” b.s. and let kids be kids!

Some School Administrators Just Don’t Get It

The particular school I’m referring to in this case is Readington Middle School. A group of 8th graders decided that they weren’t satisfied with their 30 minute lunch break, and so decided to protest by paying for their lunches using only pennies. A logical person would say that this was a harmless act of civil disobedience, much like Rosa Parks’ decision to refuse to give up her seat on the bus. However, the geniuses at this school decided that the students were “slowing down the cafeteria line” and “not giving the lunch aides the respect they deserve,” and so decided to give each of the 200 students in line that day a 1 hour detention after school.I was tempted to think that the principle was probably just having a bad day, until I read this quote that made me certain that this guy is a raving LUNATIC:

“Most reasonable people understand that the school needed to respond to this.”

Yes, the school needed to respond! They needed to give these kids an extra five minutes for lunch! Rather than going the stupid route of giving them all detentions. This crackpot went on to say that the school officials would work to

”…harness the organizational power and desire of the students and channel it towards something that could impact the greater good.”

If the school really wanted to teach them that they could use their abilities for the “greater good,” maybe they should have given them some extra time for lunch. That way the kids could see the potential for protests to work. Oh, and on top of all this, it wasn’t like the kids were trying to pay for a $10 meal using pennies. No, they were trying to pay for $2 worth of food (for those of you who are mathematically challenged, that’s 200 pennies). While that may seem like a lot, it’s still nothing compared with the “damage” they could have done.Finally, I’d like to point out that the school pretty much killed any right to peacefully protest that the kids had, glad to see the Constitution is still holding strong… http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2008/02/students_get_detentions_for_pa.html

Here’s what everyone was searching for today, the day of the 80th Academy Awards:Now I have a few comments about these.7. Oscar Ballot- OK, this one makes sense given that the Oscars are tonight10. Gerorge Clooney’s Girlfriend- Don’t you people have anything better to search for than other people’s girlfriends?29. Sneaky Castro- First off, the whole Castro thing happened on like Tuesday, why are people searching for it now? And second off, why are you searching for sneaky and not Fidel or Raul? 38. Watch Oscars Online- This raises a great question, why can’t I watch the Oscars online? Come on Academy, get your act together.46. Jon Stewart- I wonder why he was so popular today. I think it might have to do with the fact that he’s hosting the Oscars.48. Titler- John Stewart made a joke at the beginning of the show about the failed run for President by Mr. Titler. Most intelligent people immediately realized that it was a joke. Sadly, enough people thought he was being serious that they decided to search for him, that it ended up on the top searches of the day. 57. Ellen Paige- If your gonna search for people, at least learn to spell there name. Might I add that the proper spelling “Ellen Page” didn’t even make it onto the list.76. RedCarpet.com- Um, why are you searching for a website when you know the address of the site? That’s the most pointless thing ever. 83. Miley Cyrus Oscars- Why did she even get invited to the Oscars, let alone allowed to present an award? What significant movies has she worked on? NONE!98. Oscar Tickets- Sorry to break it to ya, but it’s pretty much impossible to get tickets unless you “know someone.” At this point though, even if you know the head of the Academy, you still won’t be able to get in.And, that’s what the world was searching for today.
